Every printer here promises fast, detailed results, but the technology inside, the size of what you can print, and how much setup it demands vary a lot. Here is how these machines work, the one decision that matters most before you compare anything else, and the specs actually worth weighing.

What does a 3D printer actually do?

A 3D printer builds an object one thin layer at a time, following a digital model you slice into instructions the machine can follow. Every printer in this lineup uses fused deposition modeling, or FDM, which works like this:
